Moving House Checklist: Top 10 Tips and Tricks to Ease the Stress of Moving House

Moving to a new home is very exciting! It’s the thought of moving to a new place, a new home to make new memories and a new place where you can meet new people. It just sounds so refreshing! However, the actual process of moving home seems like a dreadful task. Packing up all your belongings, putting everything you own into boxes, and moving them to an empty house, you then need to decorate to call your home. While estate agents in Orpington or estate agents anywhere in the world can guide you about buying the best property, they cannot make the process of moving any more uncomplicated. So, here are the top 10 tips and tricks that will help make the process of moving a lot less stressful!

1 Have a to-do list

The easiest way to get a task done is by writing down everything you need to do and then ticking off things once you’re done. So, to make the process of moving a tad bit easier, you should make a to-do list. Add tasks to your list – like drop off these items to a charity, call the cable company to cancel the subscription, call different packers and movers to find out prices, remember to take that important box of documents from the garage and so on. Once you finish a task, cross it off your list.

2 The sooner you declutter, the better

Get rid of things that you don’t want to take to your new home. Donate them to charities, give them to old age homes or hand them over to friends and family who might appreciate them. The fewer items you have to pack, the easier it is for you. And that way, you can happily buy things for your new home without worrying about where to put them.

3 Have a plan in place

Which room will you pack up first? What items can you pack up earlier that you don’t require daily? What should be the last on your list to pack? Have a packing plan in place, that way; you won’t be running around like a headless chicken!

4 Give yourself enough time

If you decide to give yourself two or three days to pack up, your packing boxes will be an absolute mess. You will end up shoving everything into boxes, and you won’t have any idea about where you kept what. Instead, give yourself time to pack your house. Start with one room on day two, another room on day two and so on. Give yourself at least 5 to 7 days to thoroughly pack up your home so that you can do it leisurely without getting stressed out.

5 Organisation is key

To not get stressed out while packing, you need to be well organised. Label your boxes when you pack them, so you know exactly what is kept in which package. Use different coloured post-its or markers to label boxes which you can colour-code based on the various rooms these items are from. Sort things out, throw away the unnecessary items and label your boxes, so the process of packing and unpacking becomes easier.

6 Ask for help

Ask your friends and family for help. They won’t mind! It is always better to have multiple hands to help you pack up, making the whole process faster and much easier. Plus, your friends and family might have some experience in moving homes so they can give you some useful packing tips too.

7 Do one room at a time

When you start with one room, you can easily put everything in boxes and label it. If you try to pack the whole house all at once, there is bound to be confusion and a whole lot of unwanted tension. Pack up one room at a time, and once that room is done, you should take a much-needed break.

8 Use the same size boxes

While some stuff is bigger than others, it is recommended that you use the same size boxes to pack up your house. When you need to fit things in the moving truck or store them in a storage unit, it will be much faster to put in boxes of the same size instead of trying to fit different boxes of different sizes, much like a puzzle.

9 Don’t forget to take a break

When you try to finish things as soon as possible and don’t take breaks in between, the anxiety starts to add up, and you get stressed out. So, take a much-needed break every few hours, so that you can rest, relax and rejuvenate.

10 Hire a professional moving company

If you’re unsure if you can get around all the packing and organising the home move, one of the best things you can do to make moving stress-free is to hire a professional moving company. That way, you can sit back and relax while they do all the heavy lifting!
